It is called \u2018social proof\u2019. Dr. Robert Cialdini\n discusses this at length in his ground-breaking book: Persuasion.<br><br>\nHere is how it works: When faced with uncertainty, people look to what \nothers are doing, and use that for their decision. That is it. People \nfollow others when they don\u2019t know what to do.<br><br>\nYou see it every day. When people are walking to a venue, and don\u2019t know\n where to go, they follow people whom they think are also going to the \nsame location. When there\u2019s an emergency and people just stand around, \nand look at each other, and continue standing around because that is \nwhat everyone else is doing. When people wait for an applause to start \nbefore they also applaud. When you don\u2019t know what to order on a menu, \nand the waiter suggests their most popular item. The list goes on and \non.<br><br>\nLet&#8217;s see how this applies to reviews:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What goes through people\u2019s minds when they see many reviews with an average of five stars?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Answer<\/strong>: these guys are probably good. I might go with them.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>What goes through their mind when they see many reviews with an average of 1 or 2 stars?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Answer<\/strong>: these guys are terrible. I definitely don\u2019t want to go with them.<br><br>\nWhich one of these two examples do you want to be?<br><br><strong>Treat reviews like an opportunity<\/strong><br>\nThis is all very good news for you, the pro-active business owner.
