How to do Keyword Research

Posted by

The right keywords to choose for your website’s text may not be as obvious as you think. Indeed, the public may be searching by words and phrases (more often that you’d suppose) that you would never have even thought about.

Therefore when one approaches the subject of Keyword Research it is important to keep an open mind. There are many ways to accomplish this. Let’s discuss one of them.

Analyze the Competition

Seeing what other people are doing who are successful is always a good policy in business. By searching your main keyword phrases that are relevant to your website/business you can create a list of all the websites that are performing well and then inspect them individually to find out what they are doing (in regards to text, keywords, headings, title tags, meta descriptions, and more).

By doing this you will be able to ‘break out of the box” and discover keyword phrases that your website may not have. You should also take note of their navigation structures to see how they organize their pages, as it is possible that your navigation may be missing certain elements or that it could be organized more logically.

Of course, it goes without saying (and we would be remiss if we failed to mention it), that when analyzing your competitors’ websites you should only analyze websites that have good rankings in the search result pages.

Another admonishment when analyzing a competitors’ website is that you must always remember that there are factors in play which unbeknownst to you have a role in his (your competitor’s website) good search engine positioning. It is not JUST the keywords he chooses. He could also be spending a fortune on promotion and advertising which in turn has boosted his website up.

Conclusion

If you want fresh ideas and another perspective for your keywords then it behooves you to invest as much time as you need in analyzing your competition to find what they are doing and test it on your website.
