What is Google Authorship?

Posted by

Many years in the making, Google Authorship has recently started making waves in the SEO community, however it is still relatively unknown to most web marketers and web masters.

Simply, it is a new way of attributing authorship over content written on the web. It is made possible entirely by Google Plus (which means you’re going to have to get your G+ set up before you can do anything with Google Authorship). This is a boon to anyone who has lamented over plagiarized content. But the benefits don’t stop with just proper ownership assignment.

Benefits

The benefits are legion however, one of the most remunerative is a higher click rate on the search results which brandish your article with accompanying thumbnail photo and byline. In a sea of text results having the photo thumbnail is a tremendous attention-grabber.

In addition to the click rate Google Authorship allows Google to find more content from said author, allowing you serve up everything you’ve got. This makes your writer and website more legitimate and real (and not to mention professional) to your reading public.

Privacy

A few words on privacy; as already stated you have to have a Google Plus account along with a name and a photo. In addition to that, for all the content you want attributed to yourself on your website you will have to put ‘by [Google Plus Name]’ on that page. Therefore if you make a G+ account with a wacky fake name, you’ll have to put that wacky fake name on your content pages, additionally that will be the name which is featured in the search engine result ‘bylines’.

For individuals who do want their content out there but not their name, this may not be agreeable to them.

How do I do it?

Next week we will unveil all and describe how to setup Google Authorship. If you don’t already have your G+ however, you should avail yourself of one as soon as possible!
