Should my business be on Houzz?

Posted by

Before we delve in to answer that question let us first discover what Houzz actually is and how it is used.

What is Houzz?

Houzz is very new, being only five years old it now receives over 15 million unique visitors a month (90% of which are home-owners). Wikipedia describes it as: “A web site and online community about architecture, interior design and decorating, landscape design and home improvement. The Houzz platform and mobile apps feature interior and exterior home photos, articles written by architects, interior designers and home design experts, product recommendations, and a user forum.”

While that is true, a simpler and easier to understand explanation would be if you think of it as the Pinterest and Yelp of home improvement. Users sign up for free, and are able to:

  1. upload photos of their home’s interior and exterior designs
  2. search through photos of others to get inspiration for their own projects, and add these photos to their ‘ideabook’ (boards in Pinterest)
  3. search for and purchase individual products (chairs, lamps, desks, etc), right from the website
  4. search for local contractors, view their portfolio and reviews

What does this mean for my business?

Houzz boasts over three million home improvement professionals in its database. If your business has anything to do home remodeling, renovations, improvement, or landscaping work then Houzz is for you. Otherwise you’ll have to stick with Yelp and Pinterest.

Examples of professionals/contractors who are on Houzz:

  • Architects & Building Designers
  • Design-Build Firms
  • General Contractors

  • Interior Designers & Decorators

Houzz allows businesses to create a business profile page for free, enabling you to:

  1. post photos of your projects
  2. advertise (not free)
  3. interface directly with potential customers and answer their questions
  4. collect reviews
